Here's the latest with NCAA college softball
The GIST: With the college softball regular season winding down, teams have one last anxiety-inducing chance to jockey for conference tournament seeding. No pressure, no diamonds, right, ladies?
No. 15 LSU vs. No. 13 Alabama: Alabama’s fan base has been one of the sport’s strongest all season. Example A: On Sunday, game three of the Crimson Tide’s series with mortal enemy Auburn became the third most-watched game of the NCAA softball season. Example B: Elite fifth-year pitcher Montana Fouts now has her own holiday in the state of Alabama.
- After dropping the Auburn series, however, the Tide looks worryingly low. They’re neck-and-neck with LSU in the standings, and with just over a week until the SEC tournament, this series is a must-win for both teams, starting tonight at 7 p.m. ET.
No. 22 Virginia Tech vs. No. 6 Clemson: This series, which starts tonight at 4 p.m. ET, is the last of the regular season for both squads, and Clemson is racing against the clock to overtake No. 5 Florida State in the ACC and earn the coveted top seed in the May 10th conference tourney.
- Both teams failed the vibe check this week — Virginia Tech followed a brutal sweep at the hands of Florida State with a loss to Marshall Tuesday, while Clemson choked against an unranked Liberty team Wednesday. In other words, the desperation dial is set to 10.
