Rounding up NCAA softball Regionals
The GIST: College softball is on the verge of busting into mainstream sports culture, and it’s no surprise why: This weekend’s 100-game Regional round was packed with SportsCenter-worthy highlights. Time to break the internet scoreboard.
The walk-off rallies: No. 7–seed Missouri and No. 11 Georgia both fought through elimination brackets to advance to next weekend’s Super Regionals. Yesterday’s extra-innings RBI saved Mizzou’s season, while Georgia advanced thanks to the final touch on a come-from-behind masterpiece. On these diamonds, it’s not over ’til it’s over.
The underdog dubs: Just two unseeded teams survived the weekend: Arizona, who sailed through No. 12 Arkansas’ Fayetteville regional undefeated, and Baylor, who traded high-scoring shutouts with No. 13 Louisiana before ultimately squeaking into Supers with yesterday’s 4–3 elimination-game dub.
No. 1 Texas pitchers shine: Junior Mac Morgan threw a complete-game no-hitter in Friday’s 5–0 win over Siena, then freshman phenom Teagan Kavan tossed a one-hit complete game shutout to advance 7–0 past Northwestern yesterday. In their three Regional games, Texas outscored their opponents 26-2. Big bats plus a formidable bullpen? That’s one hell of a combo.
