Look what you made JuJu do

Morning, gorgeous!
Who’s more tortured, the Poets Department or NCAA president Charlie Baker? Either way, we’re so happy you’re starting your week with us.
— No. 3 Iowa women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark with the understatement of the year. Clark racked up a 38-point double-double in Saturday’s 93–85 sold-out road win over Maryland, placing her just 66 points away from history.

The GIST: In a weekend of blockbuster matchups, one freshman stole the show: No. 15 USC guard JuJu Watkins. Watkins scored 51 points (!!!) in her Trojans’ historic 67–58 Friday win over No. 4 Stanford, the latest in what’s already shaping up to be a standout year. This kid is more than all right.
The stats: Watkins is a verified scoring machine. She leads the Trojans in every offensive category and trails only the aforementioned Caitlin Clark in points per game. She was named AP Player of the Week last month and made last week’s Wooden Award Top 20 watchlist — massive accomplishments for a first-year player.
- USC’s season has been a roller coaster, but even when the Trojans struggle, JuJu shines. Case in point? She’s averaged 23 points over their four losses.
The context: The reigning Gatorade Player of the Year (an accolade awarded to the country’s top high school hooper) generated tons of hype before starting college, especially when she chose USC, a historically good but recently mid program.
- JuJu’s now following in the footsteps of Trojan alum and WNBA greats Lisa Leslie and Cheryl Miller, and her star power alone has put USC back on the map — but can she lead them to a deep postseason run?
What’s next: The door to a Pac-12 title is closing quickly, especially after Stanford’s 80–60 smackdown of No. 7 UCLA yesterday. But if USC runs the table in their eight remaining regular-season games, they’ll build up some serious momentum heading into March Madness — and it’ll be largely thanks to their freshman phenom.

The GIST: With four tantalizing Top-10 matchups, this was the regular season’s most exciting weekend thus far. Here’s who came out on top:
No. 3 UNC wins the blue-blood battle: The Tar Heels downed arch nemesis No. 7 Duke 93–84 on Saturday, solidifying their lead in the ACC with a monster game from forward Armando Bacot. Fans flooding the streets after a regular-season win? Only in this rivalry.
No. 8 Kansas runs down No. 4 Houston: The Jayhawks cracked the code on Houston’s elite defense, exhausting them with quick ball movement and lights-out shooting to cruise to a 78–65 win in front of Saturday’s deafening crowd.
- Kansas center Hunter Dickinson led the Jayhawks with 20 points, which pushed him past the 2K career benchmark. Bow down to the big man.
Panic mode for No. 10 Kentucky: The Wildcats suffered their third loss in four games, falling 103–92 to No. 5 Tennessee at home Saturday. Kentucky’s defense continued to struggle, while Tennessee strengthened their case for a No. 1 seed when Selection Sunday rolls around.
Big Ten banger goes to No. 2 Purdue: Reigning Player of the Year Zach Edey is him: Purdue’s star center became the third player in NCAA history to rack up 2K points, 1K rebounds, and 200 blocks in his team’s huge 75–69 road win over No. 6 Wisconsin yesterday. Step aside, Justin Bieber — Zach is the true Canadian sweetheart.

Upsets rocked the season’s opening Saturday, including No. 4 Penn State’s 13–12 loss to unranked Colgate and No. 5 Johns Hopkins’ 13–12 overtime loss to No. 13 Denver, which featured six goals (aka a sock trick) from Denver attack JJ Sillstrop. Now that’s how to start the season on a high note.
🏐 Men’s volleyball
Men’s volleyball parity continued to rise with some big upsets this weekend, but none bigger than Division II (DII) program Daemen’s 3-2 Friday win over No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, a DI legacy program.
- This marks the Wildcats’ second-ever dub over a ranked team in program history — which, for the record, is just six years old.
🤸 Women’s gymnastics
Six more athletes earned perfect scores over the weekend, including two at the same meet: Blood rivals Michigan and Michigan State, tied at No. 13 in the national rankings, each picked up 10s yesterday as MSU won at Michigan for the first time since 1990. Call that Mitten Madness.
