Sing it, sports fans
From The GIST (hi@thegistsports.com)
It’s Friday!
Everybody’s looking forward to the weekend, but before you get your Rebecca Black on, you gotta get down with the latest sports news. Fun, fun, fun, fun.

Grey Cup
🏈 Stop, drop, and roll
The GIST: Ready for some deep conversations at the Waffle House BC Place? The 111th Grey Cup kicks off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET, featuring the East Division champ Toronto Argonauts and the West Division–winning Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The gridiron’s already burnin’ up, so hut, hut, here we go.
Toronto Argonauts: The Argos flipped the script during last week’s Division Finals, upsetting the defending champ Montréal Alouettes 30–28. But the dub came at a cost: Controversial quarterback (QB) Chad Kelly suffered a broken ankle, meaning backup signal caller Nick Arbuckle’s now in the spotlight.
- Arbuckle’s only thrown 14 or more passes in three games this season and will have his hands full with the Bombers, who have the best pass defense in the league this season.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers: The Bombers are this close to cementing their dynasty, making their franchise-record fifth straight Grey Cup appearance despite starting the season 2-6. Since that shaky start, they’ve lost only once, a 14–11 October L to, you guessed it, the Argos.
- Winnipeg boasts a healthy starting QB in superstar Zach Collaros — who threw for four touchdowns in last week’s 38–22 Division Finals win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders — and the type of confidence that only comes from a dominant second half of the season.
Our prediction: Toronto’s been stellar in title games, eking out a 24–23 W over Winnipeg in 2022 to nab their seventh win in as many Grey Cup appearances. However, the Bombers have their starting QB, momentum, and an appetite for revenge, so it’s Winnipeg for us. Whatever happens, one thing’s for sure, we’re feelin’ heat in November.
NWSL Playoffs
⚽ Runnin’ back and forth
The GIST: The NWSL semis are here, with the top four teams in the league battling it out for a spot in the upcoming title match. Ready your vocal chords — the games are about to begin.
No. 3 seed NJ/NY Gotham FC vs. No. 2 seed Washington Spirit — Tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET: These two East Coast powerhouses are facing off at rowdy (and sold-out) Audi Field in D.C. tomorrow. Beyond their home-field advantage, the Spirit enter this game with Trinity Rodman–levels of confidence, having handed Gotham two of their four regular-season losses.
- But the defending champ Bats won’t go down without a fight, and if there’s one thing they can count on, it’s their grit — Gotham netted three stoppage-time winners this year, including last week’s quarter-final (QF) zinger from midfielder Rose Lavelle.
No. 4 seed Kansas City Current vs. No. 1 seed Orlando Pride — Sunday at 3 p.m. ET: Neither the Current nor the Pride have ever made the NWSL Championship, adding an extra layer of pressure to this already-fiery match. KC is riding a 10-game unbeaten streak, but injured Golden Boot winner Temwa Chawinga may be limited, adding a wrinkle to their game plan.
- Meanwhile, the Pride boast a healthy and dynamic offensive duo in strikers Marta and Barbra Banda, whose tandem teamwork (and sweet friendship) has dazzled fans all season long. Regardless of the winner, expect happy and sad tears after Sunday’s final whistle.

🏀 NBA Cup: LA Lakers vs. San Antonio Spurs — Tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET — TSN

🏒 NHL: Edmonton Oilers vs. Toronto Maple Leafs — Tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET — CBC

- Not only is the AFC North’s top spot on the line in this pivotal divisional matchup, but the Ravens’ superman, QB Lamar Jackson, will have to conquer his kryptonite: a Steelers squad the reigning MVP’s beaten only once over his illustrious career.
