🏈 The Weekly Blitz: From yeehaw to yikes
From The GIST (hi@thegistsports.com)

Leveling The Playing Field
NFL Week 6 officially kicks off tonight, but there’s still plenty of time to crush the competition in our free-to-play NFL Pick’ems Challenge. Flexing that football know-how just might pay off…literally.
Which NFL icon wore it best in Week 5?
That would be Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who took his team’s moniker to heart with a custom Nike ensemble featuring a cascading fringe, oversized belt buckle, and cowboy hat. Trouble is, “yeehaw” quickly became “yikes.”
- The Cowboys fell 24–16 on Thursday Night Football to the previously-winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers — and Lamb left the game in the fourth quarter with a quadriceps injury. Not exactly a triumphant ride into the sunset.

🌤️ Here comes the sun, doo-doo-do

The GIST: The LA Rams are 2-3 after a gut-wrenching 37–34 Week 5 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills. Needless to say, it’s been a turbulent start for the preseason Super Bowl favorites — but how worried should we actually be about the Rams?
- The Rams’ forecast: Cloudy with a chance of sun. Let’s get into it.
🌧️ The NFC West is a juggernaut: A below .500 record in a division this talented raises a lot of flags, especially considering LA already dropped a game to the still-perfect San Francisco 49ers in Week 1. Recent history has proven that home-field advantage matters in the playoffs.
🌧️ Special teams miscues piling up: A blocked kick cost Harrison Mevis his job in Week 5, but this unit’s issues extend beyond field goals. Case in point? Their opening kickoff against the Bills was returned for 70 yards, setting up a Buffalo field goal.
⛅ The highly-touted defense has been underwhelming: The absence of two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett cannot be understated. It’s a big reason the defense has managed just eight sacks this season, tied for sixth fewest in the league.
- Plus, the special teams faux pas hasn’t done this D any favors: While they allow just 285.2 total yards per game (third-best in the NFL), the Rams surrender more than 24 points. This star-studded group should be stacking more stops even without Garrett.
☀️ Offensive firepower endures: The league’s most productive offense in 2025 continues to produce, led by reigning MVP quarterback (QB) Matthew Stafford — the Rams average a league-leading 424.4 yards per game. That hasn’t always translated to points, but there’s two major reasons:
- 1️⃣ Starting field position: The Rams begin drives with the fourth-worst field position.
- 2️⃣ Special teams: Four missed/blocked field goals left 12 points on the table.
☀️ Their schedule eases up: Cue the Beatles because a midseason rally could be on the way — the Rams’ next six opponents are a combined 8-16-1, starting with this Sunday’s 4:05 p.m. ET tilt against the rebuilding Arizona Cardinals.

💌 Consider this your official invite. Nothing to lose, lots to learn, and a whole NFL community to gain. Make your picks now.

1. San Francisco 49ers (5-0) ❤️
Consider the Niners a lesson in resilience, exceeding expectations, and millennial magic.
2. Kansas City Chiefs (4-0) 💛
KC might be the most complete team in the NFL. Full stop.
3. Seattle Seahawks (3-2) 💚
Are we entirely sold on Seattle? Not during spooky season, but that defense is nightmare fuel.
💚 Seattle Seahawks vs. 🧡 Denver Broncos — Tonight at 8:15 p.m. ET
You already know the Hawks’ defense is their bread and butter, meaning QB Sam Darnold doesn’t need to be a hero. He just needs to not throw an interception on the first play…or the third. Turnovers have been a thorn in Darnold’s side since he returned from injury in Week 3.
- As for the Orange Crush, they’re undefeated at home this season, but their depleted defense is a cause for concern against the reigning Super Bowl champs. Even so, this team never balks at a challenge.
Until next week — may your team’s offense always find the endzone,
