Daily Edition – Day 6: Salt air, and the rust on your door
From The GIST (hi@thegistsports.com)
Say cheese!
Can’t stop, won’t stop thinking about Italian gymnast (and Paris Team All-Around silver medalist) Giorgia Villa’s endorsement deal with parmesan cheese…yes, way. Feeling, ahem, grate heading into today’s newsletter.

🏊 American swimming superstar Katie Ledecky once again dominated the women’s 1500m freestyle, winning her eighth (!!!) Olympic gold and 12th career Olympic medal yesterday, which ties her for most swimming medals by an American woman. Legendary.
🥉 Montreal’s Ilya Kharun raced to bronze in the men’s 200m butterfly, finishing behind France’s three-time (and counting) gold medalist Léon Marchand and Hungary’s Kristóf Milák. The 19-year-old gave Canada its first men’s swimming medal since the 2012 London Games.
- As for the women, Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh cruised through the 200m butterfly semis, earning a spot in today’s 2:30 p.m. ET final as she seeks her third medal in Paris. Allez!
🤿 Diver Caeli McKay just missed the podium for the second straight Games, posting a fourth-place finish in the women’s 10m synchronized diving event with partner Kate Miller. Both McKay and Miller will compete in the individual 10m platform event beginning next week.
🏊🚴🏃 The women’s and men’s triathlon finals finally went ahead after concerns surrounding the polluted Seine River, with France’s Cassandre Beaugrand taking the gold and making the home crowd proud. Great Britain’s Alex Yee came out on top in the men’s race.
🎾 Félix Auger-Aliassime is Canada’s King of Clay. The 23-year-old upset Daniil Medvedev, making him the first Canadian man to advance to the men’s singles quarter-finals. Plus, he’s competing in today’s mixed doubles championship alongside Gabriela Dabrowski.
- Elsewhere, the Spanish duo of Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz fell in the quarter-finals, while Great Britain’s Andy Murray and his partner Dan Evans will look to extend Murray’s farewell tour when they play their quarter-final this morning.
3️⃣🏀 Two games, two wins for the Canadian women’s 3x3 squad. The red and white upset top-ranked People’s Republic of China 21–11, with the Plouffe sisters (Katherine and Michelle) and Paige Crozon leading the way. Hoop yeah.

⚽ On to the next one
The GIST: The Olympic women’s soccer quarter-finals (QF) are set — and you can get in on the action by joining our 100% free bracket. Sign up and scroll on, the fun has just begun.
Who’s through: The No. 5 USWNT and No. 8 CanWNT are both through to the knockouts, with the Americans winning Group B after taking down No. 12 Australia 2–1 yesterday and the defending gold medalist Canadians overcoming FIFA’s six-point deduction, topping No. 22 Colombia 1–0 to finish second in Group A.
- Joining them in the knockouts are No. 1 Spain, No. 2 France, No. 4 Germany, No. 7 Japan, No. 9 Brazil, and Colombia.
- Unfortunately for Brazil, they’ll be without their fearless leader Marta for Saturday’s QF match against France after the soon-to-be-retiring captain was issued a red card yesterday, rendering her ineligible for the next game.
CanWNT showcase grit after damning FIFA report: For the second time in program history, Canada won all three of their Olympic group stage matches, an even more impressive feat considering the six-point deduction the team pushed through following Dronegate.
- Led by clutch goal scorer Vanessa Gilles, the resilient squad will face Germany in a 1 p.m. ET QF match on Saturday.
- Meanwhile, a shocking FIFA report into Canada’s culture of spying revealed damning evidence that CanWNT head coach Bev Priestman was not only aware of the team’s drone usage, but wrote that the practice of spying on opponents “can be the difference between winning and losing.” Terrible.
