The Group Chat: Choose your fighter

Leveling The Playing Field
Here at GIST HQ, we’re having a really hard time deciding who to root for in the WNBA Finals, especially after last night’s thrilling Game 1. Why? Let’s be honest: Choosing your fighter is about so much more than the on-court product. It’s about the vibe.
- Today, you’ll get to know the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries on a different level before Game 2 tips off tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET. That’s plenty of time to decide if you’re Team Angel or Team Gabby.
- Psst — if you’re interested in learning about each squad’s basketball prowess, check out yesterday’s Special Edition WNBA Finals primer. Let’s ball.

💭 Atlanta Dream: The ultimate fighters
When your team name is literally a reference to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, grit, tenacity, and a refusal to back down become your driving force. The 2026 season got off to a brutally inconsistent start, but Angel Reese & Co. put their foot on the gas following the All-Star break and have not let up since.
Speaking of, let’s talk about the Angel Reese effect. Since joining the Dream in the offseason, Reese has exploded on the court, and her undeniable impact on the culture of the Dream and the W has only grown. Unsurprisingly, the city has welcomed her with open arms: StuHub reported that regular-season ticket demand jumped 91% from 2025 to 2026. She’s here, and she’s so major.
Atlanta shows up for the Dream, and it’s easy to see why: The team unapologetically celebrates Black culture, from swag surfin’ in the stands to HBCU nights (there are four Historically Black Colleges & Universities in ATL).
- Not to mention, the Dream have always stood for social justice, with the most famous example being their 2020 campaign against then-owner and Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler of Georgia, who attacked the Black Lives Matter movement.
- Thanks in no small part to the Dream’s support for her opponent, Raphael Warnock, Loeffler both lost the Senate race and later sold the Dream to former franchise star Renee Montgomery. Never back down, never what?

🐘 Ellie the Elephant (NY Liberty)
Ellie’s not a mascot; she’s a movement.
🐦 Violet the Raven (Golden State Valkyries)
We’d do anything for Vi and her wire-rimmed glasses.
🐇🐢 Dot and Dez (Toronto Tempo)
A potentially queer mascot couple? In the WNBA? 10/10, no notes.
😼 Prowl (Minnesota Lynx)
There’s just something about those feline eyes…

💜 Golden State Valkyries: The warrior princesses
The Valkyries’ origin story includes a bold prediction: In 2023, owner Joe Lacob declared that the new expansion team would win a championship in its first five years. Lacob insisted on hiring a head coach who would relish his very public challenge — Natalie Nakase was the woman for the job.
Trash-talking, basketball obsessed, “game film is actually therapy” Nakase has led Golden State to the Finals in just their second year and took down her former squad (the Las Vegas Aces, where she served as an assistant coach) in the process. How? Beyond being a brilliant hoops mind, Nakase prioritizes personal connections with each woman on her team. As Jo March said…
From their on-court success to their 48 consecutive sold-out home games, the Valks are the women’s sports success story. Violet-clad crowds blanket the Chase Center, turning “Ballhalla” into something undeniably feminine and powerful, just like their Norse mythology moniker.
Leading the charge? That’s playoff powerhouse Gabby Williams, a journeywoman workhorse who has finally found the right squad and team culture to highlight and amplify her gifts. In her seventh year in the league, Williams has become a true two-way star, not to mention her viral postgame interviews. It’s all about fit, and Williams is the warrior Ballhalla needed.
Question of the Day
