Leveling The Playing Field
And they’re off!
The 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup (WC) is officially underway (more on yesterday’s results below), and our No. 30 CanMNT begin their journey today at 3 p.m. ET. Keep an eye out for a match preview ahead of kickoff, but first check out today’s news from the pitch and beyond.
⚽ As you read, the WC is officially upon us. Here’s the need to know from the biggest sporting event in the world.
🙌 No. 13 Mexico kicked off the WC on the right foot, dismantling No. 61 South Africa 2–0 yesterday. Forward Julián Quiñones scored the first goal of the tourney, while veteran Raúl Jiménez added a golazo — an emotional moment after he suffered a life-threatening skull fracture on the pitch six years ago.
- Of note: One Mexican and two South African players were issued red cards yesterday, meaning all three will be ineligible to play in their next matches. Oof.
👏 Late last night, No. 25 Korea Republic won the second match of the tourney, taking down No. 40 Czechia 2–1 behind an 80th-minute goal from forward Oh Hyeon-gyu.
📺 There are 10 games on the docket this weekend, but, in addition to CanMNT’s, you shouldn’t miss these three:
- 🇧🇷 No. 6 Brazil vs. 🇲🇦 No. 7 Morocco (Group C) — Tomorrow at 6 p.m. ET: Once-dominant Brazil is in their redemption era, while Morocco was the 2022 WC semifinalist Cinderella. Keep an eye on Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior against Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi.
- 🇳🇱 No. 8 Netherlands vs. 🇯🇵 No. 18 Japan (Group F) — Sunday at 4 p.m. ET: This might be the best Japanese team ever, with wins over Brazil and No. 4 England this year But we pity any offense that has to square up against legendary Dutch center back Virgil van Dijk.
- 🇨🇮 No. 33 Côte d’Ivoire vs. 🇪🇨 No. 23 Ecuador (Group E) — Sunday at 7 p.m. ET: Defensive enthusiasts, this one’s for you — goals will likely be at a minimum given dark horse Ecuador’s super solid D, unless Côte d’Ivoire pulls off yet-another serious upset.

NBA & NHL Playoffs
🏆 Stevie Knicks, Knickelback, Knickole Kidman

The GIST: The NBA’s NY Knicks (up 3-1) and the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes (up 3-2) are on the cusp of sports immortality — both teams are one win away from hoisting their respective trophies. With a pair of potential title-clinching tilts on deck this weekend, the men’s playoffs are reaching their crescendo.
🏀 The Knicks are chasing history: And that’s beyond their improbable 29-point comeback against the San Antonio Spurs in Wednesday’s Game 4. It’s been 53 years since the Knicks have won a title, an eternity for a team with a fanbase this rabid. This NY playoff run has an air of destiny to it, from Jalen Brunson’s unfathomable finishing to OG Anunoby’s clutch heroics.
- San Antonio held double digit leads in all four games, but NY’s resilience is unmatched: They’ve capitalized on the Spurs’ late-game blunders like clockwork. All to say, keep tomorrow’s 8:30 p.m. ET Game 5 on until the end, especially if a certain orange bag makes the trip to Texas.
🏒 Hurricanes skating to end two-decade drought: For the first time in this series, a multi-goal lead was not relinquished as the Canes topped the Vegas Golden Knights 4–2 last night, moving one win away from their first Cup since 2006. Who else but captain Jordan Staal lit the lamp: The 37-year-old center has now scored in all five games this series.
- Expect goaltending to be a hot topic ahead of Sunday’s 8 p.m. ET Game 6 in Vegas. Carolina’s Brandon Bussi has been solid in back-to-back wins, while Vegas’ Carter Hart has literally been the worst goalie in Cup Final history. Keeping our side of the street clean.

⚾ MLB: NY Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays — Tonight at 7:37 p.m. ET — Sportsnet
- Wednesday’s series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies was a mixed bag: pitcher Max Scherzer hit the milestone 3,500 career strikeouts mark, but the Jays fell 7–4. Now the homestand continues against the Evil Empire — time to bring the noise.
🥎 AUSL: Texas Volts vs. Carolina Blaze — Tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET — TSN+
- Opening week continues with this showdown between two 2-1 squads. Keep an eye on flamethrowing Blaze pitcher Karlyn Pickens, who notched a win in her pro debut earlier this week and Texas two-way standout Aliyah Binford, who leads the team in batting average and ERA.
🏀 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup: Minnesota Lynx vs. Las Vegas Aces — Tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET — League Pass
- Lynx rookie Olivia Miles is the league’s most impactful player, powering Minnesota to an eight-game win streak. But this high-stakes Cup tilt also features the W’s second most impactful hooper: Aces icon A’ja Wilson, a noted That Girl University alumna.
🏎️ Formula 1: Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix — Sunday at 9 a.m. ET — TSN
- What were we doing at 19 years old? It certainly wasn’t tallying five straight race wins like Mercedes phenom Kimi Antonelli. The Italian driver hasn’t lost a Grand Prix since March, matching the longest win streak of a little someone named Lewis Hamilton.
⚽ With weeks of adrenaline-pumping soccer ahead, we know the tournament will become a major part of our personalities this summer. What’s your gameday mindset?
