Over 48 hours later and we’re still reeling over the news that four-time MVP LeBron James is officially joining the Philadelphia 76ers following a free agency frenzy over the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. Time to pick that jaw up off the floor (and hopefully prepare for the ultimate crossover) — there’s even more stunning sports news to discuss.

🏀 True care, truth brings
The GIST: The Group Chat popped off about all things WNBA All-Star Weekend, from the historic three-point contest to the most chaotic livestream in sports to the collection of ’fits that belong in the Louvre. Now, it’s back to reality as the second half of the season tips off tomorrow.
❌ League addresses ongoing harassment crisis: It’s been a tumultuous year with recurring instances of racism and harassment dominating headlines, culminating in a meeting between league commissioner Cathy Engelbert and the players’ association last week. Any tangible action remains unclear, but those discussions reportedly “marked the beginning of an ongoing dialogue.”
- Engelbert highlighted the importance of transparency and reiterated the league’s existing security measures in her All-Star press conference on Saturday, later sharing that a replay center will be introduced in 2027 to help manage the continued criticism of league officiating.
❤️🩹 Injuries continue to pile up: Stop us if you’ve heard this before but the W’s been decimated by injuries with 216 already reported this year, a whopping 51 more than this time last season. It remains a league-wide concern, but thankfully two previously sidelined superstars are so back.
- 🐱 Napheesa Collier and the Minnesota Lynx vs. the Toronto Tempo — 8 p.m. ET: After posting a double-double in last week’s season debut, expect more magic from perennial MVP candidate Collier as her league-best Lynx host All-Star Marina Mabrey and the Tempo.
- ✨ Kelsey Plum and the LA Sparks vs. the NY Liberty — 10 p.m. ET: Plum was putting up MVP–caliber numbers before a leg injury sidelined her in June. And while the Sparks are keeping their cards close to their chest, she should be hooping in this marquee matchup.

🥎 So nice they did it twice
The GIST: The Utah Talons are your 2026 Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) champions, defending their crown by sweeping the Chicago Bandits in this weekend’s best-of-three championship series.
- While the dust and confetti settles on the diamond, let’s look back at a transformative AUSL season and what’s on deck for the sport. Just the beginning.
🏆 Talons ride exceptional pitching to repeat: Defense really does win championships. Utah hurlers Georgina Corrick and Montana Fouts (the respective 2025 and 2026 AUSL Pitchers of the Year) silenced the typically explosive Bandits bats, allowing just one run each in their individual championship game outings.
- As for the Talons offense, outfielder Jadelyn Allchin earned series MVP honors after blasting a home run and a double in yesterday’s championship–clinching 6–1 win. Soaring and flying.
📈 AUSL knocks it out of the park in second season: After switching to a more traditional team-based model in 2025, the changes kept coming in 2026 with expansion and a transition to city-based teams. And it was a swinging success: Viewership was up 183%, a number that will likely skyrocket following Saturday’s broadcast, the first-ever pro softball game on network T.V.

🏎️ McLaren’s Lando Norris is back on top. The defending world champ won the Hungarian Grand Prix yesterday, his first race victory of the season. His teammate Oscar Piastri, meanwhile, was controversially forced to retire from the race.
🚲 Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar won a record-tying fifth (sadly shortened) Tour de France yesterday, further cementing his legacy as an all-time great.
⛳ World No. 98 Jenny Shin clinched her first LPGA title in over a decade yesterday, winning the Women’s Scottish Open 3,737 days after her inaugural tour win.
🏌️ Twenty-one-year-old Jackson Koivun won the 3M Open yesterday, claiming his first PGA title in just his third tournament on the tour. This kid is certainly alright.
⚾ Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease put on a pitching masterclass on Saturday, allowing just one hit and striking out 12 in a complete game 6–0 shutout of the Boston Red Sox.
- Sadly, that’s where the good news ends: The Jays dropped the series and outfielder Addison Barger will undergo season-ending right elbow surgery today.
🇨🇦🏅 Canada’s enjoying a gold rush at the Commonwealth Games. Gymnast Ellie Black won her second career individual all-around gold medal (and shared the podium with her compatriot, bronze medalist Lia-Monica Fontaine), while swimmer Josh Liendo won the 100m butterfly. Shining bright.
⚽🎉 The NSL’s Halifax Tide recorded their first-ever win over the Vancouver Rise, a 1–0 Saturday dub courtesy of Rise forward Jessica De Filippo’s own goal following Tide defender Naya Cardoza’s excellent corner.
⚽👏 CanMNT goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau’s outstanding form continues. He notched a clean sheet in club team Orlando City SC’s 1–0 Saturday win over Eastern Conference–leading Nashville SC, ending Nashville’s 10-game unbeaten streak.
⚽☹️ Gotham FC and USWNT defender Emily Sonnett was stretchered off the field with a non-contact knee injury in the Bats’ 2–2 Friday draw with the Portland Thorns.
- Sonnet’s injury sadly cast a pallor on an otherwise thrilling game: Gotham’s major international break acquisition Sam Kerr scored the 62nd minute equalizer, her first NWSL goal since 2019.
