Saturday Scroll: Meet the women running the WSL

Former Nike exec Nikki Doucet is Canadian, but the WSL CEO has brought renewed passion and business expertise to the women’s game in England. For Doucet, the crux of the WSL’s success lies in its differences from the men’s game, not its similarities. “Women’s football is built on a rebellion and a rebellious spirit,” she said earlier this year.

In 2023, Doucet was brought in by the Football Association (FA) — English soccer’s governing body — to lead the league’s transition to the club-owned corporate entity, NewCo. Since becoming CEO, she has had groundbreaking commercial successes, including a “near doubling” of sponsorship and media rights deals. She renewed or facilitated partnerships with Barclays, Apple, Mercedes-Benz, and Nike, and rebranded the league in 2025 to help present it as a singular, unified product.

• While the WSL’s growth is already impressive, Doucet's focus remains on long-term success instead of flashy, short-term wins. The league launched its new website in May 2025 and set its sights on expansion, with Chelsea investor Alexis Ohanian envisioning the WSL’s first billion-dollar franchise.

Doucet’s next challenge? To ensure growth becomes more evenly distributed across teams: She acknowledged that some clubs invested ahead of the curve and are already reaping the rewards, while others have lagged behind. As the calendar soon turns to a FIFA Women’s World Cup year, Doucet will look to close that gap and fill seats across the WSL.

• "The mission is to build the most distinctive, competitive, and entertaining women's football club competitions in the world,” Doucet said last year. It's a reminder that for all the marquee sponsorships, her real test is turning a moment into a movement.

Doucet’s belief in the WSL is matched by businesswoman Michele Kang. Kang is accustomed to breaking the status quo: The former Cognosante founder and CEO became controlling owner of the NWSL’s Washington Spirit in 2022, then gained majority stakes in the French Première Ligue’s OL Lyonnes (formerly Olympique Lyonnais Féminin) and the WSL’s London City Lionesses (LCL), making her the first person to own top women’s clubs in three different nations.

• About two years after Kang took charge of London City, the team climbed from the second division Championship league to the WSL, becoming its first fully independent club with no ties to a men's team.

Kang’s London City acquisition marked a significant turning point for LCL. With the club in financial disarray and desperate for new investment, Kang stepped up to the pitch, providing new training facilities, a stadium deal, and multiple star player signings.

• London City made 16 signings in a single summer, including a record $1.88M deal for Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) Grace Geyoro. This was followed up by PSG teammate Mary Earps and Barcelona stars Alexia Putellas and Mapi León joining this summer.

Kang has also invested in the women’s game at large. In 2024, she announced the launch of Kynisca Sports International, the first multi-team global organization dedicated to the scientific and systemic development of women’s football. Noticing a stark discrepancy in women’s sports performance data, Kang’s Kynisca Innovation Hub (KIH) attempts to “unlock female athletic potential,” according to the company website.

• From specialized athlete technology to tailored coaching methods, Kynisca vows to customize training to the specifics of the female body — not modeling methods off of the men’s game. What a concept.

Less flashy than Doucet’s deals and Kang’s portfolio, Charlton Athletic Women manager Karen Hills’ story of building WSL success began before the league was even founded. As a player, Hills was a Charlton legend, winning the FA Cup trophy in 2005 and becoming the first-ever member of Charlton’s Women’s Hall of Fame.

• Then, she turned to coaching. From 2009 to 2020, Hills led Tottenham Hotspur's women’s side through four league promotions from the amateur South East Combination Women's Football League to the WSL.

• At Tottenham, Hills overcame a stark lack of funding and resources (she even drove the team’s minibus to away matches) to win again and again on the pitch, eventually turning it into a superpower.

After 11 years at Tottenham, Hills returned to Charlton in 2021 as head coach, the same year the women's team was fully professionalized and brought back under the same ownership as the men's club. Even then, resources stayed tight: During Hills’ tenure, Charlton has changed ownership multiple times and is now reported to be up for sale once more.

Despite financial instability, Hills set her sights on securing Charlton's WSL debut. It took five seasons, a 27-game unbeaten run, and a UEFA Pro Licence, but she got it done. This May, Charlton beat Leicester City on penalties in the WSL's first-ever promotion playoff, sending Charlton into the WSL’s top flight for the first time and securing coverage on Sky Sports and BBC.

• Though Charlton enters the WSL at the bottom of the food chain, recent reporting pointed to its growing valuation. Oakwell Sports Advisory, the firm handling the club's ongoing sale process, pitched Charlton as "the last remaining football club upside opportunity in London."

It was an underdog story for the ages…and it's just getting started. Charlton's first-ever WSL match is on September 6th, the opening weekend of the newly expanded 14-team league. Consider Hills’ mission accomplished.
