Upsets and showdowns highlight mid-week NCAA women's hoops
The GIST: Women ballers, go on and take a bow. With only a month left before March Madness, the court queens had us goin’ in a wild week for the nation’s top teams.
The upset: Jaws? On the floor. Thanks in part to a whopping 16 points off turnovers, unranked Marquette stunned the No. 4 UConn Huskies 59–52 Wednesday night in the Huskies’ second straight loss. The last time UConn dropped two in a row? 1993, long before any current player was born. Guess Gen Z’s right — the ’90s are back.
The showdown: The No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers secured a massive dub in front of a record home crowd last night, beating the No. 5 Iowa Hawkeyes 87–78. While Hawkeyes superstar Caitlin Clark posted an astounding 35 points, it wasn’t enough to overcome the combined 50 that Hoosiers guard Grace Berger and forward Mackenzie Holmes racked up.
What’s next: Not to worry — No. 1 South Carolina vs. No. 3 LSU begins long before Riri takes the stage. The last remaining undefeated Division I (DI) teams (men’s or women’s) will duke it out Sunday at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN. Catch these diamonds shining in what’s likely the game of the year.
