Daily Edition – Day 4: Haters gonna hate
From The GIST (hi@thegistsports.com)
Good morning!
Did you know pools could be slow? Neither did we. On that note, let’s dive into another day of enlightening Olympic coverage.
Country | 🥇 | 🥈 | 🥉 | Total |
🇯🇵 Japan | 6 | 2 | 4 | 12 |
🇫🇷 France | 5 | 8 | 3 | 16 |
🇨🇳 People’s Republic of China | 5 | 5 | 2 | 12 |
🇨🇦 Canada (9th) | 2 | 1 | 2 | 5 |
🥇 Mere hours before swimmer Summer McIntosh touched the wall first (more on that below), judoka Christa Deguchi won the women’s under-57kg title yesterday, Canada’s first gold at this year’s Games and the country’s first Olympic win in judo.
🥉 In another Canadian first, Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray earned the bronze in men’s 10m platform synchronized diving yesterday, Canada’s first medal in the event.
🏉 Down go the hosts! Chloe Daniels and the Canadian women’s 7s rugby squad bid au revoir to France with yesterday’s relentless 19–14 quarter-final win, sending them through to today’s 10 a.m. ET semi against undefeated Australia. The medal hunt continues.
🎾 Novak Djokovic cruised to a straight-sets win over King of Clay Rafael Nadal yesterday in what was likely the final matchup between two of the greatest tennis players ever.
- As for the Canadians, Bianca Andreescu’s Paris campaign came to an end in the second round, but Leylah Annie Fernandez and Félix Auger-Aliassime live to fight another day as the action rolls on this morning.
🏀 Canada women’s basketball gave up a narrow first-quarter lead in yesterday’s group play opener vs. France, managing only two points in the second quarter and eventually losing 75–54. Onto the next.
🤸 The Canada men’s artistic gymnastics team made history by reaching their first team final over the weekend, but they missed out on the podium, finishing eighth overall. Still eh-mazing.
CanWNT drone spying scandal
🇨🇦⚽ Not done yet
The GIST: Yesterday, No. 8 CanWNT formally appealed the six-point deduction handed down by FIFA in the wake of their ongoing drone scandal. A resolution could be imminent as the case is fast-tracked before group stage games conclude…tomorrow. Buckle up.
Canada protests sanction for “unfairly punish[ing] athletes”: ICYMI, on Saturday CanWNT was docked six points from their group stage total amid shocking espionage allegations. The sanction currently leaves them with 0 points, erasing the six points earned from their two group stage wins (teams earn three for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss).
- While it’s not impossible for the red and white to advance out of Group A, it won’t be easy, even with the victories — and stars like Vanessa Gilles are sharing their frustration as the team feels they’re being punished for a crime they did not commit.
What’s next: An appeal hearing is expected today, with a possible verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport anticipated tomorrow, ideally before Canada’s final group stage game against No. 22 Colombia kicks off at 3 p.m. ET. It truly all comes down to this.
Women’s swimming
🏊 Sweet Summer time
The GIST: Still weeks out from her 18th birthday, Toronto’s own Summer McIntosh has already become the face of Team Canada in Paris. Talk about making a splash.
McIntosh grabs gold in 400m individual medley (IM): The 17-year-old dominated the field pool yesterday to earn her second medal of the Games, beating runner-up Katie Grimes of the U.S. by a whopping five and a half seconds.
- Expectations for McIntosh were sky-high after she narrowly missed the 800m freestyle podium in Tokyo and set a world record in the 400m IM at May’s Team Canada trials. Safe to say she’s more than lived up to the hype.
What’s next: McIntosh’s grueling schedule continues with tomorrow’s heats and semifinal in the 200m butterfly, where she’s widely expected to make Thursday’s final.
- She’ll then have a fourth shot at history in the 200m IM, with heats and semis scheduled for Friday and finals on Saturday. Our prediction? The summer of Summer is just getting started.
