CFL Grey Cup: Putting the “win” in Winnipeg
The GIST: It’s been two years since the last Grey Cup final, but yesterday, in front of a sold out crowd in Hamilton, we watched the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33–25 in overtime (OT) to defend their title. Overall, a rough day for Hamiltons in championships.
The first half: Though the game started a bit slow, with Winnipeg chipping away against the solid Hamilton defense, the Ticats came out on top, ending the first half with a 10–7 lead.
The entertainment: A year in the making, the Arkells’ halftime performance did not disappoint. In fact, it kind of kicked ass. We dug the brass band, but especially fangirled over a Lumineers feature, dueling pianos and the band's bright plaid pants.
The second half: Feeding off the halftime-show energy, the Ticats capitalized on a Kameron Kelly interception to finish the third quarter ahead 19–10. But the Ticats couldn’t stay out front, allowing the Blue Bombers to storm back to tie things at 25 at the end of regulation.
- With momentum on their side, the Bombers struck the endzone again in OT and intercepted Hamilton’s final drive to officially claim the Cup. What. A. Finish.
