The Kansas City Chief are the Super Bowl champions
The GIST: For the second time in the past four years, Kansas City are your Super Bowl champs, becoming just the second team to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit in the Big Game. Let the dynasty conversation begin.
How it happened: The Philadelphia Eagles held a 10-point lead at the half, but we’ve learned to never count out Kansas City quarterback (QB) Patrick Mahomes, even if he’s injured.
- Despite limping to the locker room before the Rihanna concert, Mahomes found the magic, helping KC score on every possession in the second half and put up a whopping 21 points in the fourth quarter.
- While Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker completed his redemption story by nailing the game-winning field goal after missing an extra point early, a controversial penalty call helped KC set up the game-winner.
The MVP: Twenty-seven-year old Mahomes is now the first player since 2000 to win regular-season MVP honors and the Super Bowl MVP award (his second) in the same season. Not done yet.
- As for the Eagles, QB Jalen Hurts, notwithstanding a fumble, still has plenty to be proud of, including setting a handful of records in the loss.
Zooming out: KC has firmly entered the dynasty chat, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be passing the phone anytime soon. Playoff Patty is still in his prime, Travis Kelce is sticking around for at least the next two years and it’ll be hard for head coach Andy Reid to walk away after a win like that. Pass the cheeseburgers, it’s party time.
