Arsenal vs. Tottenham broke WSL's attendance record with 47K fans at the North London Derby

Saturday is clearly for the girls. In their 4–0 victory against visiting Tottenham F.C., Arsenal welcomed 47,367 fans to the North London Derby, smashing the Women’s Super League’s (WSL’s) attendance record by almost 10K in the process.

The GIST: Saturday is clearly for the girls. In their 4–0 victory against visiting Tottenham F.C., Arsenal welcomed 47,367 fans to the North London Derby, smashing the Women’s Super League’s (WSL’s) attendance record by almost 10K in the process. Can you say golazo?
The trend: Interest in women’s soccer spiked significantly during the summer, with many leagues and tournaments putting up eye-popping numbers around the globe.
- In April, Spain’s Barcelona Femení broke the world (!!!) attendance record twice in 24 days, ultimately hosting 91,648 at Camp Nou. The previous best was the 90,185 spectators at the USWNT’s 1999 Women's World Cup win.
- Then, in July, a sold-out Wembley Stadium crowd of 87,192 watched England defeat Germany to bring home the Euro championship. The figure marked the most-attended Euro final match (men’s or women’s) ever.
- In North America, the NWSL’s San Diego Wave hosted over 32K at their new Snapdragon Stadium earlier this month, setting a new league record. A totally tubular feat for an expansion team.
Zooming out: This trend shows that women’s soccer fandom is here to stay. And most importantly? As Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall alluded to, these seats are being filled by paying customers — no giveaways, no discounted prices. Brands, media and tech companies, take note. Don’t sleep on women’s footy.
