Iga Świątek and Novak Djokivic win historic French Open titles
The GIST: What a weekend on the clay at Roland-Garros, where No. 3 Novak Djokovic and No. 1 Iga Świątek turned up the heat for two historic finals performances in the City of Light.
Men’s: Djokovic officially pulled ahead in the race for men’s tennis dominance yesterday, winning his record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam by defeating No. 4 Casper Ruud in straight sets. The only other player — man or woman — with 23 Grand Slams in the Open Era? The one and only Serena Williams.
- But the Joker isn’t done yet. After winning the Australian Open in January, he’s halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam and is the only member of the Big Three (Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer) currently competing on the ATP tour.
- At 36 years old, he’s the oldest male winner of the French Open, but hey, age is just a number.
Women’s: Speaking of, on Saturday, 22-year-old Świątek became the youngest woman since the aforementioned Williams to win four Grand Slams after staging a third-set comeback against unseeded Karolína Muchová. Three of Świątek’s wins have come at Roland-Garros, her “favorite place on tour.” Easy to see why.
