Which Canadian teams will clinch a spot in the second round of the NHL playoffs?
The GIST: Hold off on your manicure because the ongoing best-of-seven NHL Playoffs series are heading for Game 6. Here’s what you need to know about our squads north of the border and the other happenings as we head into a potentially big clinching weekend.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Somebody call Britney Spears because oops, the Leafs did it again, dropping last night’s home Game 5 4–2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Defenseman Morgan Rielly lit the lamp of hope early in the first, but the Buds couldn’t overcome the Lightning’s quick response.
- Up 3-2 in the series, the Leafs will need to work on controlling their temper and avoiding unnecessary penalties if they want to find success when the puck drops tomorrow for Game 6.
Winnipeg Jets: Misery certainly loves company. The injured Jets were eliminated with last night’s 4–1 Game 5 loss to the dominant Vegas Golden Knights. Despite starting the season strong, Winnipeg sputtered into the postseason on a Wild Card berth and just didn’t have enough in the tank to advance. Farewell until the fall.
Edmonton Oilers: After a three-day break, Connor “McHockey” McDavid and the 3-2 series-leading Oilers are refreshed and ready to become the first Canadian team to advance when they face off against the LA Kings down south for tomorrow’s Game 6. Time for a true power play.
Elsewhere: The Carolina Hurricanes and top contender Boston Bruins (both leading 3-2) missed their first chances to advance earlier this week, but have another opportunity to seal the deal when they face the NY Islanders and Florida Panthers tonight at 7, and 7:30 p.m. ET, respectively.
- As for the rest of the first-round series? They could all be decided this weekend. Under pressure.
