Unranked Cornell and Georgetown pull off massive upsets in men's soccer

The GIST: Watching the men’s poll’s weekly earthquake — and the stunning upsets that inevitably follow — is like the Mento-in-Diet Coke experiment. Explosive change is the guys’ game’s only constant, and last night, two squads issued tenacious responses to their new ranks.
The tumult: The evening’s biggest shocker came from Cornell, who took yesterday’s poll ousting personally. Big Red saw red, channeling their rage into a stunning 2–1 upset of No. 7 Syracuse to hand the reigning natty champs their first season L.
- On the flip side, Georgetown rocketed from unranked to No. 16 for no apparent reason, then immediately proved why with a massive 2–0 dub over No. 12 James Madison. Now, that’s how to ride your momentum.
- No. 13 Northwestern, however, squandered their six-point bump, drawing 2–2 with lackluster Wisconsin in their Big Ten opener. Not exactly the commanding start to conference play they’d hoped for.
What’s next: With the bulk of this week’s men’s action in the rearview mirror, the women take the wheel tomorrow. The battle for an early-conference edge is raging, setting up some extra-spicy midweek matchups…
- No. 9 Alabama and No. 11 Arkansas are both seeking their season’s first landmark win and, with SEC competition tougher than ever, there’s no time like
the present7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network+ to bag it.
- Over in the cutthroat ACC, No. 16 Duke hasn’t allowed a goal in three matches, but their rock-solid defense will be tested when No. 10 Notre Dame comes to town at 7 p.m. ET on ACCNX.
