Olympics Day 5 Recap: Team CA
🏒 Hockey: Hey Google, play “Party in the USA.” Canada downed storied rival Team USA 4–2 in the much-anticipated round-robin matchup last night. The highlight? An Olympic-first penalty-shot goal by none other than Canadian “Captain Clutch” Marie-Philip Poulin.
- With a perfect record in pool play, Canada and the new great wall of China Ann-Renée Desbiens are moving onto the quarter-finals. Time to reclaim that gold medal.
⛸ Figure Skating: After dealing with COVID-19 issues, Keegan Messing finally hit the ice last night in the men’s short program. The ever-smiling Messing finished ninth, advancing to tomorrow’s free skate competition for a chance to win a medal.
- And we’d be remiss not to highlight our Southern neighbor’s success, as the U.S.'s Nathan Chen “pulverized” the men’s short program world record last night, finishing with a score of 113.97. Jaws = dropped.
🎿 Freestyle ski: Despite leading the competition in the qualifiers, Megan Oldham just missed the big air podium, finishing in fourth, with fellow Canadian Olivia Asselin coming in eighth in their Olympic debuts.
- Oldham’s not done yet though — she’ll continue her medal hunt in slopestyle on Sunday.
