Connor McDavid is knocking on history’s door
The GIST: Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid is knocking on history’s door — he could become the first NHLer in a century (and just the 3rd ever) to notch six straight multi-goal games when his squad takes on the Winnipeg Jets tonight at 9 p.m. ET. Pitter patter.
The history: The last time a player was this hot? The 1920s, when Harry “Punch” Broadbent and Joe Malone got ’er done with the Ottawa Senators and since-folded Hamilton Tigers, respectively.
- Plus, McDavid’s no stranger to magical feats. He’s already secured his first 50-goal season (and was the fastest active player to do it), became the fifth fastest player in NHL history to score 800 goals and handily leads the league in points and goals this season.
What’s next: The only major trophy missing from the two-time Hart Trophy (aka MVP) winner’s shelf is the coveted Stanley Cup, a prize the Oilers have yet to reclaim since their victory in 1990.
- So the team is padding their lineup to support McDavid — and hopefully ensure the Next Great One doesn’t jump ship — by acquiring top defensive talent Mattias Ekholm and depth forward Nick Bjugstad ahead of today’s 3 p.m. ET NHL trade deadline. Showtime.
